This is a 35min documentary by NHK on Nobuyoshi Araki from 2010. While it centers around his diagnosis and recovery from prostate cancer (the subject of which became an excellent photobook) it looks back on the impact that Death has had on his life, namely losing his wife and most recently his beloved cat Chiro. The film crew follows the photographer around various fashion shoots and even on the streets of Ginza. The short bit filmed at one of his “Erotic Housewives” shoots is cleverly safe for work. It’s too bad it isn’t subtitled in English.
Since it is from NHK it will most likely be taken down soon- check it out while you can.
Great news- Taka Ishii Gallery will be hosting Winogrand’s first solo exhibition in Japan from December 7th - 27th, 2013. The show will be comprised of twenty vintage prints from The Animals and Women Are Beautiful.
